Catching up with CEO of Triba Health, Moritz Mueller
Recently, we launched Triba Health, a company with a focus on empowering individuals with type 2 diabetes to address the root cause of their condition through personal changes in lifestyle and nutrition. We sat down with Moritz Mueller, CEO & Co-Founder of Triba Health, and captured the essence of our conversation below.
Why did you decide to move from Vietnam to Denmark to join KRING and start Triba Health?
After spending many years in the pharmaceutical industry and larger corporations, I was seeking a more agile and dynamic venture. Triba Health and KRING immediately ticked the boxes of my imaginary requirement list. Landing in Copenhagen in May 2023, I found an agile, health-focused environment ideal for scaling our innovative ideas.
Can you share some of your insights about lifestyle-related diseases in Denmark?
This is an intriguing question. When comparing the recent evolution of metabolic disorders like Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and hypertension, it is a real eye opener.
All metabolic disorders are on the rise – despite the medical advancements. Healthcare systems are under pressure. Fixing the symptoms alone will not work in the long term. We believe that Triba Health have found a key which can reverse these negative health trends towards a healthier tomorrow.
Prevalence of metabolic diseases:
1. Type 2 diabetes: ~7%
2. Obesity: ~18%
3. Hypertension: ~36% of adult population.
With your background in big pharma, what is your take on why this problem has not yet been fixed?
I think we need to distinguish between chronic diseases and acute diseases. For chronic lifestyle diseases, I believe that traditional treatment alone is not sufficient. Every person impacted by a chronic lifestyle disease requires a fundamental change in lifestyle. We must focus on addressing the root causes rather than perpetually chasing symptoms. If you address this for diabetes or metabolic syndrome then you are solving not only diabetes, but also partially address obesity, hypertension and all of the sequeales to which type 2 diabetes is a risk factor alone. I just read that over 88% of contacts for foot therapy are related to the diabetes industry. Several industries solely exist because we cannot prevent people from getting type 2 diabetes in the first place.
What does Triba have to offer in this regard?
At Triba, we strongly believe in empowering self-care in addition to traditional healthcare. We aim to give people more control over their health and help them make informed and sustainable changes in the root causes they can actively influence – lifestyle and nutrition. „Chronic“ conditions require a sustainable lifestyle change, and we’ve developed a continuous education program with a support system of healthcare professionals and fellow customers which is strong enough to create these sustained lifestyle changes for a healthier tomorrow.
How does the program look from a customer’s perspective?
Customers sign up for the ‘Triba+’ 6-month digital education program, guiding them through topics around nutrition, stress, sleep, movement, and other diabetes-related subjects. We assess the situation initially, set objectives with our dietitians, and follow through with the program and live webinars. After 6 months, we offer our ‘Livsstil‘ program, providing additional education and support well described as “lifeline support” by one of our members.
Can you share some impact numbers?
Certainly. We have retention rates of over 80-90% for both our 6-month program and the retention program. Our analysis shows that we can reduce the long-term blood sugars of 99% of customers and 86% from above diabetes thresholds to below. We offer our program as employer health benefit for corporate customers. Our program is up to 100% reimbursed and can be implemented very easily.
The future is to offer our program as pay-for-performance model to health insurances and pension funds – I believe this is the future of healthcare.
Triba Health offers a flexible and easy to be implemented employer health program – often at zero costs for employers.
How does this program benefit employers?
Healthy employees benefit everyone. People with type 2 diabetes require more frequent doctor visits and are often sick, leading to additional ~4 days of sick leave per. If you add the increased risk for depression and others, this number increases even further.
Companies with related ESG objectives can use our program to reduce the average sick leave within the organization.
What is the feedback from your B2B customers so far?
We generally receive positive feedback because we offer a risk-free investment for employers. Additionally, our program is partially reimbursed, creating a win-win-win situation for everyone involved. We have onboarded two smaller companies and are in discussions with several others. In 2024, we are working on expanding these efforts. If any of your readers are interested to learn more, please reach out!
